Fenugreek seed is an herb that has been used for thousands of years in various cultures, from Indian cuisine to traditional Arabic applications. With its slightly bitter, nutty taste and subtle aroma, fenugreek seed is a favorite ingredient in both savory and sweet dishes.
A culinary journey with fenugreek
From curries to chutneys, fenugreek is a well-known ingredient in many culinary traditions, especially in South Asia, the Middle East, and North Africa. Fenugreek seeds are often roasted or lightly fried to soften the sharp taste and bring out the nutty undertones. Fenugreek is also a main component of spice blends like garam masala and is often used in combination with cumin, coriander, and turmeric.
Fenugreek seeds are sometimes sprouted and added to salads or sandwiches for extra crunch, while fenugreek powder is a convenient way to add its unique flavor to dishes.
In the Netherlands, fenugreek is also sometimes used in cheese production. It is added to certain types of cheese for a subtle spicy flavor, showcasing the versatility of the seed, which adapts to different cuisines and dishes.
Industrial applications of fenugreek
Many people don’t know that fenugreek is also used outside the kitchen. For example, it is used as a binder in some industrial applications, such as in the production of cosmetics and soaps. The natural mucilage in fenugreek makes it ideal for binding liquids, giving external products a smooth, nourishing texture.
Fenugreek seed in YIXIY™
In the fermentation process of YIXIY™, we use a subtle amount of fenugreek seed. Although you don’t directly taste the fenugreek, it is part of the complex herbal mix that makes YIXIY™ so unique. Each 15 ml shot contains:
- Berry: 0.67 mg fenugreek seed
- Rosehip: 0.78 mg fenugreek seed
- Ginger: 3.4 mg fenugreek seed
However, these amounts are much lower than the 300 mg of fenugreek seed powder needed to support health benefits. At a dosage of 300 mg per day, fenugreek seed can help maintain a healthy balance of fat metabolism¹ and support normal blood glucose levels¹.
For these effects, you would need to consume additional fenugreek seed or products with fenugreek seed powder, totaling at least 300 mg.
