Ginger, or Zingiber officinale, is one of the world’s most versatile and beloved herbs. Known for its spicy, sharp flavor and warming aroma, ginger is a staple ingredient in many cuisines, from Asia to the West. The ginger root has been used for thousands of years in both savory and sweet dishes.
The ginger plant
Originating from Southeast Asia, ginger grows best in tropical climates with plenty of rain. The plant produces an underground rhizome, which we know as ginger root. This root has a strong, penetrating aroma and a characteristic flavor: spicy with a hint of citrus. The root itself ranges from light yellow to deeper orange, depending on the variety and ripeness.
Culinary uses of ginger
Ginger is used in an astonishing variety of dishes. In Asian cuisine, it is a base for stir-fries, soups, and marinades. It adds a spicy depth to curries and is used to make tea with an invigorating aroma. In Western cooking, ginger appears in baked goods like ginger cookies, gingerbread, and the famous English ginger cake. Even in cocktails like the classic Moscow Mule, ginger plays an essential role with its spicy influence.
In winter, ginger is often used in warm drinks like chai tea and mulled wine, as it gives a warming sensation and pairs perfectly with cinnamon and cloves. It’s also used in jams, syrups, and as a flavoring in exotic lemonades.
Other uses of ginger
Ginger is also popular in the cosmetics industry. It is used in shampoos, creams, and massage oils. Ginger has an invigorating aroma and provides a subtle warming effect, making it a popular ingredient in luxury skincare products.
In the beverage industry, ginger is also used. You’ll often see ginger in soft drinks, like ginger ale and ginger beer. These spicy drinks are enjoyed globally as a refreshing option or a cocktail base.
Ginger in YIXIY™
YIXIY™ is fermented with a mix of 19 herbs, including ginger. The amount of ginger per daily 15 ml shot varies depending on the flavor variant:
- Berry: 0.67 mg ginger
- Rosehip: 3.12 mg ginger
- Ginger: 3.4 mg ginger plus an additional 120 mg of ginger juice
These quantities contribute to YIXIY™’s unique flavor, especially in the variant named Ginger. However, these amounts are much lower than those used for specific health effects. For example, to support the immune system¹ or to benefit from ginger’s antioxidant properties¹, a daily dosage of at least 100 mg of ginger powder is recommended. To support the normal function of the respiratory tract¹ or digestion¹, an even higher dosage of 500 mg of ginger root per day is advised. Since YIXIY™ contains only a small amount of ginger, you may want to add fresh ginger or products with ginger powder to your diet to achieve these health effects.
